Last year, Nvidia’s Tegra 2 chip was one of the most widely-used in high-end Android smartphones and tablets. This year it looks like the company’s quad-core successor will be the go-to chip. TheTegra 3 has been tipped to be powering another monster Android phone. This time it’s the previously unseen LG X3.
LG made a splash recently with its stylish new Prada phone, but the X3 sticks to a more traditional smartphone path when it comes to turning customers’ heads: it’s packing some serious hardware.
In addition to the quad-core Tegra 3 powerplant, the LG X3 features a gargantuan 4.7-inch display that runs at 720×1280 pixels. That’s just shy of the not-quite-a-phone-anymore Samsung Galaxy Note and slightly larger than Sony’s new Xperia Ion. The X3 will feature 8MP rear and 1.3MP front-facing cameras, 16GB of internal storage and microSD expansion, support for 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, and HSPA+. The X3 also sports a 2000mAh battery, and LG has still managed to cram it all into a sub-9mm chassis — which is obviously a bit easier when you have a 5-inch diagonal slab to work with.
Like many Android phones due to launch in the coming months, the leaked LG X3 image shows that it still sports capacitive buttons below its display, even though ICS features on-screen controls. That could change prior to launch, of course. The X3 has been pegged for an early Summer (or late Spring) launch and there’s a good chance that LG will show it off at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next month.
It’s going to be interesting to view the benchmarks once they start popping up so we can see how the X3 and HTC’s quad-core Zeta stack up to other top-of-the-line Android devices. The jury is still out on how impressive the gains will be — most Android apps aren’t optimized for multithreading yet, after all.
