Genius BlueEye DX-ECO wireless mouse has no battery

For the more eco-friendly among us Logitech brought out the perfect keyboard in late 2010 and thenlaunched a Mac version last year. It was called the K750 and offered up a wireless keyboard powered by solar cells. Unfortunately, they didn’t pair it with a solar-powered wireless mouse, but that’s because you really don’t have the surface area to make that work. It also doesn’t help that your hand covers most of the mouse when in use.
Technology advances are made every year though, and in 2012 it looks like we’re getting a wireless mouse that doesn’t need a battery. It’s called the Genius BlueEye DX-ECO and relies on a rechargeable gold capacitor instead of an on-board lithium-ion battery.
The BlueEye still needs charging, but it only takes 3 minutes using a micro USB cable that connects to the capacitor (100,000 charges guaranteed). After that, you’ve got a wireless mouse ready to use. The only thing we don’t know yet is how long it will function for before a further 3 minute charge is required. If it’s a day, then great. If it’s a couple of hours, then this mouse will get annoying fast for heavy users.
As for features, it uses the 2.4GHz wireless band for communication using a tiny USB dongle. There’s 7 buttons including previous and next thumb buttons, a flying scroll wheel selector, and an adjustable dpi button (800dpi or 1600dpi). Using “advanced BlueEye technology” it’s also possible to use the mouse on most surfaces including non-transparent glass and marble.
Considering this mouse could save you a small fortune on batteries, it’s still reasonably priced at just $39.99. Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear to be available to buy anywhere yet.
