Toshiba charges a tablet while it plays a video underwater

Toshiba decided it wanted to stand out from the crowd when it came to showing off a new tablet atCES this year. That’s quite difficult to do as they are essentially all the same–a display, maybe some cameras, and a big sign demanding yours is thinner than theirs.
But Toshiba has managed to turn heads by not only turning up with a waterproof tablet, but managing to charge it while submerged in water.
Waterproofing a tablet is useful for anyone who wants to use it outside, or likes to surf and read in the bath. Toshiba went a step further though, and made it possible to charge the concept tablet, which currently doesn’t have a name, while being completely submerged. This was demonstrated by dropping it in a fish tank, having it play a movie, and charging it all at the same time.
Charging in water is made possible due to the use of a magnetic charging system. The tablet doesn’t need to be in contact with the charging base, but it does have to be within 3-inches of it. So in this case the tablet sits at the back of the tank and the charger is next to it on the other side of the glass.
I doubt anyone would ever want or need to charge a tablet in water, but it gets the point across. Another thing to remember is you won’t get a Wi-Fi signal in water.
For now, Toshiba isn’t giving any details on when this tablet will be announced as an official product. Being a concept, we may never actually see it, but I do like the idea of a waterproof unit.
